Well both my sons are back home now and they’ve tasted the latest garden delights: the cucamelons were a hit, and so are all the ripe berries!
.
.
It was my birthday yesterday so I baked myself a gluten free blackberry and chocolate cake with chocolate butter icing and a side serving of fresh blackberries and raspberries. It was so good! 🎂😋

I have begun to notice that due to being around halfway to Equinox our garden is already getting less in the way of sunshine, due to the large overhanging trees.
.
.
☀️If you compare the two pics you can see that my veggie bed is not getting optimum sunshine hours. I’m noticing that this is already affecting my courgettes as production is slowing down. But the tomatoes on the sunny patio are still growing and ripening.
.
.
🌤These pics were taken at lunchtime; the first while the sun was behind a cloud, and the second as the sun came out, so it’s easy to see where the sunniest places are in the garden at this point in the year. (I also find it interesting how different the photos look due to strong contrasts that the sunshine creates!)
.
.
⛅️It’s observations like this, about sunshine hours through the seasons that can inform a good Permaculture garden design. It’s why I’ve located my veg bed where it is (it’s the sunniest position in the garden besides the patio and rockery). How do you use observations of the sunshine when designing your own growing space?

First ripe raspberries of the season! ❤️
.
I’ve got my eye on these for a special cake I’m going to make in the next day or two. Or perhaps I’ll just eat them right now? 😁
.
In our previous garden we had a glut of raspberries each year and I used to love making jam. ❤️
.
What’s your favourite way to eat raspberries? ❤️

The seedlings have come up in my living wall! It felt very quick from sowing to first leaves, such is the joy of August sowings.
.
🌱spinach
.
🌱wild Rocket .
🌱chard
.
🌱radish
.
.
The radish came up first, as expected. I might transplant some of the spinach and wild Rocket seedlings into other parts of the garden as they get bigger because they’ll run out of room if they all stay in the living wall. I’m using it a bit like a plant nursery I suppose.
.
.
How are your own August sowings going?

It’s my first time growing cucamelons and I love them! They look so cute climbing through my other crops, and they taste so lemony-cucumber! 💚

What’s your favourite way to eat them?

Our front garden food forest is looking lush with all this summer rain! This garden has no water access so I rely on rain entirely for watering now that it is established.
.
🌿The rhubarb has grown again into monster proportions which has surprised me. It’s enormous!
.
🌿The asparagus has become a dense mass of ferns, thankfully we supported it better this year so it has survived the intense winds of the weekend.
.
🌿I am thinking I might need to cut the willow right down this winter because it is already outgrowing the space! It’s yellow stems will make useful garden materials for supporting plants next year.

Happy Sunday! ☀️
Here’s a view of my garden looking out of my yellow back door. .
.
🌿We just came home from a bracing walk up the hill, which we can access from the bridle path which passes the top of the garden (behind the shed). Since the farm up there has been put up for sale, the pasture has been left empty for over a year and I’m so excited to see so many wild flowers growing in those empty fields. Nature is quickly filling the void with a new diversity of flowers and insects!
.
.
🌿I feel so lucky to live somewhere with direct access to the countryside from my back gate. It always inspires me to see what’s growing, flowering or fruiting at various times of year and makes me feel more connected to Nature.
.
.
🌿I was shocked to see a UK telly program recently, where children in a London classroom were asked if they’d ever visited the countryside, not one child raised their hand! None of them had EVER been to the countryside!! Our connection to nature is so important don’t you think? Especially the younger generation who will be the Earth’s custodians of the future. I believe in bringing as much of nature as possible into large cities like London so that children can learn the value of wildlife and about how their food is grown. .
.
🌿I’m also a big supporter of farming with nature (preferably based on Permaculture principles) as opposed to large scale chemical farming which is still the most common method. I feel organic farming and wildlife protection is key. Also rewilding projects are super important for providing habitats for endangered species. Having just read the book ‘Wilding’ by Isabella Tree I’m feeling more hopeful about the direction this could take here in the UK. I really recommend the book! .
.
🌿I’d love to hear your own opinions about the ways in which we can produce enough food for a growing population while providing enough spaces for wildlife.

Here’s a couple of humble garden harvests over the past 24hours from the no-dig bed in my back garden and the pots on my patio. I like to harvest little and often, how about you?
.
.
💚It’s the first time the cucamelons have made it onto my feed (they’re usually a good snack while harvesting)! I made this plateful of goodness into a colourful side salad last night.
.
.
💚Today I harvested a few peas and Manga beans for our Sunday roast. .

I’m harvesting a bowl of blackberries every day right now! .
🖤I’m growing a cultivated variety called ‘Loch Ness’ which is thornless. The berries grow on last year’s growth, so that makes it easy to prune.
.
🖤Some are going into the freezer for future smoothies and Autumn crumbles, some are going into cup cakes. I love to bake! .
🖤What’s your favourite way to use blackberries?

Here’s a little tour of my conservatory and patio garden. It’s a typical English August afternoon here; it was cloudy, now the sun’s out and it feels warm, and tonight rain is coming! ☁️☀️🌧

Lunchtime harvest! I’m starting to notice a pattern in my life, I work at home and so I often eat in the garden and end up doing a bit of harvesting afterwards. It makes for a pleasant lunch hour!
.
.
This was yesterday’s harvest and most of it ended up in last night’s frittata. The blackberries went in the freezer (we have a glut!). What did you harvest today?

The living wall was in need of an update: new plants for the hanging pots, removal of plants gone past their best, and sowing of new quick cropping veggies in the top four compartments.
.
Newly sown are:
.
🌱Rainbow radish
.
🌱Spinach
.
🌱Wild Rocket
.
🌱Chard (saved seed from a red chard in the front garden 2018)
.
.
I’ve really enjoyed having this additional growing space this season! The Strawberries did well and some are now having babies which are colonising the lower empty compartments.
It’s a lovely place to sit and reach over to pick salads or strawberries to add to whatever meal I’m eating!
